Topic authority instead of prompt watching: why monitoring is the wrong first step
A lot of companies are asking right now: do we get mentioned in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? The better question is: which topics does AI consider us relevant for at all?
The difference between those two questions decides whether AI visibility budget works or evaporates.
The monitoring promise — and its precondition
Classic AI visibility tools all follow the same pattern: create prompts, watch rankings, count mentions, track changes. That is technically sound — and still presupposes something that is almost always missing at the start.
Because anyone creating prompts must already know which prompts are relevant, which topics really decide things, which competitors should be compared and which sources shape the answers. Without that knowledge the dashboard measures precisely — but the wrong thing.
The assumption problem
If you define your prompts yourself, you measure your own assumptions. But the most dangerous visibility gaps sit exactly where nobody looks: in topic fields the company takes for granted — and that AI systems have long since assigned to the competition.
Early B2B scans showed this pattern repeatedly: several strategic topics were held more strongly by competitors than by the brand itself. Nobody had noticed beforehand — it was on no prompt list.
The right order
That is why Infera does not start with monitoring but with a stocktake: a strategic stocktake of topic authority across five AI systems, against real competitors, along decision questions developed from market and offering — not from assumptions.
Only after that does continuous measurement make sense: along defined topic clusters, as progress tracking on top of a clean strategy. Monitoring is the second step. Take it first and you pay monthly for confirmation of your own blind spots.
