What is the difference between SEO and AI visibility?
The short answer
SEO optimises a website’s position in search result lists. AI visibility describes whether a brand gets named and recommended in the written answers of AI systems. SEO stays important — but AI answers follow different rules: topic authority, entities and source trust instead of rankings.
Two disciplines, two logics
In search, ten links compete for clicks — even position 7 gets traffic. In an AI answer there is no position 7: a few providers are named, everyone else is invisible. That makes AI visibility an all-or-nothing game per topic.
On top of that, AI systems answer questions before users visit a website. Part of the buying decision therefore happens before the first click — based on the topic picture the AI holds of the providers.
What stays the same, what changes
Good content, clean technology and strong external signals help both disciplines. What is new is the metric: instead of “what position do I rank at for keyword X?” the question becomes “which topics does AI consider me relevant for — and who does it recommend?”
That is why AI visibility does not start with monitoring individual prompts but with a stocktake of topic authority — which is exactly where the Infera scan begins.
